Investigation of color through abstract expressionism
As I paint I think of elements in nature: water, movement, wind, music and color. These feelings compose the energy from which I work.
The years I lived on a cliff overlooking the sea-sculpted shores of Aptos, California continue to influence my work. Using a full range of color, I draw upon my imagery of brilliant sunrises, sunsets and skin/scuba diving experiences around the world. Responding to nature, I dream its images as I paint. The ocean and its vastness overwhelms my soul with creative energy.
My mixed-media paintings are built of layers of color ranging from subtle to vibrant shades found in the power and the beauty of the ocean. Working toward a projected depth stimulates my development as a visual painter.
Like the bright sheen that rocks possess when viewed in a stream, glass laid over my paintings add a bold and liquid quality to the colors in my work. I believe that investigation of color as form—as the interpreter of space—frees my imagination as I capture the profoundness of the ocean. Introducing the viewer to the mood-flow of the sea prompts me to further explore the endless possibilities of color and media.
Jazz, classical as well as Flamenco guitar music are key influences as I paint. Sometimes, I can be found brushing my hands across the keys of my studio piano—its melodies constructing images in my mind. Music frees my soul, allowing my imagination to flow to my hand, which enables me to produce highly emotional work. My painting becomes a dance-like performance, telling the story of my lifelong romance with the ocean. The color and energy of my life experiences have contributed to the rich and vibrant compositions of my work. Whether I’m painting in my studio or Plein Aire (outdoors) on location at the beach, these experiences are my palette.
Composing abstraction as a colorist, the intellectual aspects of my work are overshadowed by its emotional qualities.
